United Kingdom: visas and tax residency
Outside Schengen — your UK days don't consume the 90/180 counter — but with its own system: visits of up to 6 months and a residence test (SRT) that crosses days with ties. No digital nomad visa.

Visas
Do you need a visa, by passport?
| Your passport | You can stay | Note |
|---|---|---|
| EU, US and many others | 6 months / visit | No visa, with a prior electronic authorisation (ETA); no working for UK companies. |
| Visa nationals | Standard Visitor | Apply in advance; same visit conditions. |
| Work or long stay | Points-based system | Skilled Worker, Global Talent, study… each route with its own requirements. |
Combining the UK with Europe? British days don't consume Schengen — keep the European counter with the Schengen calculator.
Tax residency
When you become a tax resident in the United Kingdom
Criterion 1 · The one Daywhere counts
183 days = automatic resident
With 183 days in the British tax year (6 April to 5 April) you're a resident with no further analysis. It's the SRT's only fixed threshold.
Criterion 2
Automatic tests
Below 183, the SRT checks whether your only home is in the UK or you work there full-time — or the opposite, to rule you a non-resident.
Criterion 3
Ties + days (sufficient ties)
If nothing is automatic, your ties — family, home, work, 90+ days in previous years — are crossed with day brackets: the more ties, the fewer days you can spend.

A digital nomad visa in the UK?
No specific visa exists
The UK doesn't offer a route designed for remote workers.
As a visitor, remote work only "incidental"
The visit allows up to 6 months and tolerates occasional remote work for your employer abroad, but not making the country your work base.
Actual work routes
Skilled Worker (sponsored job), Global Talent or Youth Mobility, depending on your case.
The British tax year runs 6 April to 5 April: don't compare your UK days with calendar-year countries without adjusting. The SRT is played by counting days — count them with the residency calculator.
Living between countries? Daywhere keeps the count
Days in United Kingdom, your Schengen counter and proof of where you were — automatic, with GPS, and with a warning before you cross any threshold.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about the United Kingdom
Do my UK days consume the Schengen counter?
No: the UK is outside Schengen. You can use your 90/180 in the EU and also spend stretches in the UK — but the British SRT counts those days separately, on its own tax year.
What counts as a "day" for the SRT?
As a general rule, being in the UK at midnight. There are nuances — transit days, exceptional circumstances and the "deeming rule" for frequent visitors — but midnight is the reference.
How few days make me safely non-resident?
Under 16 days (if you were recently a resident) or under 46 (if you weren't) you're usually automatically out. Between that and 183 it all depends on your ties — exactly the zone where a precise count pays off.
